Sweet-o-bike
Hiša eksperimentov added the 49th experiment to the collection of hands-on exhibits. Based on the field of Medicine, the Sweet-o-bike simulates the type 1 diabetes. Visitors of Hiša will be able to get familiar with the background of the diabetes as well as how cope with it with a healthy diet and proper administration of insulin.
The experiment, which was built with the help of "jazindiabetes" (IandDiabetes) and the Ministry of Higher Education, Science and Technology, was opened by the mayor of the City of Ljubljana Zoran Janković on the 12th of November.

E-xperiment - a new activity by Hiša eksperimentov
On Friday, the 23rd of November, an official opening of a new activity "E-xperiment" tok place in Hiša.
In the scope of this activity, several hands-on exhibits will be upgraded with a mouse -on www-interactive capability.
The first one among them - "The e-die is cast" - was upgraded with the help of Agency for radwaste Management ARAO and the Ministry of Higher Education, Science and Technology. The e-xperiment way opened from Brussels by the European Commissioner for Science & Research dr. Janez Potočnik.
At the same time we also presented a new hands-on exhibit "Let's hold out hands" and a series of logical puzzles. The puzzles are equipped with two hints but with no answers.

L'Oreal and Hiša eksperimentov
One of activities of Hiša eksperimentov is Reach Outreach - visiting towns (with one or two primary schools) across Slovenia with Science Adventures . We arrange three Science Adventures in each town - one for pupils, one for teachers and one for the local residents.
On Friday, the 12th of June, L'Oreal became the official general contributor for this activity.
We have also attended the pre-conference meeting of the THE Group (Thematic Human Interface and Explainers Group). This year THE group hosted a two-day training course for science explainers (a part of the PILOTS project).

SCIENCETIVAL
Hiša eksperimentov organized the first Sciencetival from the 28th to the 31st of May.
In just four days, a myriad of fun (and educational) science shows (also known as Science Adventures), science workshops, and even a real science spectacle, have taken place in Ljubljana and in Maribor.
PILOTS - Training Courses and Resources for European Science Explainers
The first PILOTS Training Course for science explainers was held in Technopolis (Mechelen, Belgium) from the 1st to the 4th of April.
Hiša eksperimentov (one of the seven project partners) has actively participated on the Training Course. We have come back from Mechelen with many new ideas and techniques for promoting science. As a part of the project we are planning to organize several multiplying events for our explainers, to spread the ideas further and spur new ones.
The next Training Course will be held in Milano (Italy) at the two days of THE pre-conference activities (2nd - 4th June) before the Ecsite Annual Conference.

First place at the International Physics Tournament
Third year pupils of Gimnazija Vič (Vič High School), under the mentorship of physics teacher Timotej Maroševič and dr. Miha Kos from Hiša eksperimentov (House of Experiments), achieved FIRST place at the international physics competition in Israel.
The international competition, Shalheveth Freier Physics Tournament , which was held from 16 to 20 March 2009 at the Weizmann Institute in the town of Rehovot in Israel, is a competition in opening safes with combination locks based on principles of physics.

Each of the 48 groups brought to the competition safes of their own construction. The safes had to be closed by a combination lock, the key to which was given by correctly solving an experimental physics task, which was contained in the safe (each safe had at least one transparent side, so that its interior could be seen).
The pupils first had to carry out a theoretical and practical defence of the experiment t and then they competed in opening the safes. Whenever, within 10 minutes, they succeeded in opening any of the safes they gained extra points. Likewise, they were given extra points whenever any of the other groups did not succeed in opening their safe. Added to the final mark was also the assessment given by fellow competitors, regarding the difficulty of opening the safes.
The pupils of Gimnazija Vič had opted for using the nature of light phenomena. The combination of digits required to open the lock on their safe -devised in Hiša Eksperimentov - could be decoded by the correct understanding and use of the scattering, reflection, refraction and bending of the light of two laser beams. Just how demanding this task was, is shown by the fact that, out of the eight teams who tackled this task, only one succeeded in opening their safe.
During the coming school year, Hiša Eksperimentov plans to hold a national high school competition in opening safes based on the principles of physics. All high schools from Slovenia wishing to participate are warmly invited to join in the national competition, at which the main prize will be the opportunity to take part in the international competition.

Ecsite Annual Conference 2008
Hiša eksperimentov has attended the ESCITE annual conference 2008 in Budapest, Hungary.
The conference was held in the Hungarian National History Museum from the 29th to 31th of May.
One of the pre-conference meetings was also the second meeting of the THE Group (Thematic Human Interface and Explainers Group) - the first ECSITE thematic group dedicated to investigate the explainers roles and training practices, with the aim to build a learning community for explainers.

Hiša eksperimentov has actively participated on a SPERIMENTANDO science festival in Padova, Italy. During the festival, which was organized from the 10th to 11th of May, we performed three Science Adventures.

Clore Garden of Science - Science festival
The staff of Hiša eksperimentov visited Science centre Clore Garden of science in the Weizmann Institute of Science in Rehovot, Israel. During the two-day Science festival at the Institute we presented six Science Advenures in English (with simultaneous translation to Hebrew).
During our stay in Israel we also visited the Bloomfield Science Museum in Jeruzalem, where we also performed one Science Adventure.

Hiša eksperimentov has actively participated on a FEST 2008 science festival in Trieste, Italy. During the festival, which was organized from the 16th to 20th of April, we performed five Science Adventures, both in Slovene and in English language.

Hiša eksperimentov started visiting kindergartens in the scope of the new outreach activity called "Scops owls of science ".

Hiša eksperimentov hosted the Ecsite Board meeting on the 10th of March. The members of the board also attended a pre-meeting tour to Postojna cave.

HAVE YOU EATEN YOUR SPINACH TODAY?
"Have you eaten your spinach today?" is the 47th "hands-on" exhibit, which was developed and constructed by Hiša eksperimentov in cooperation with the pharmaceutical company Lek. The experiment was opened by the Minister of Higher Education, Science and Technology mrs. Mojca Kucler Dolinar and the president of the board of Lek mag. Vojmir Urlep.
Two identical experiments were built for this occasion. One will be a part of Hiša eksperimentov's exhibition, while the other one will be available for experimenting on the premisses of the company Lek.

THE DIE IS CAST and SONNETS OF SCIENCE
Hiša eksperimentov enriched the collection of "hands-on" exhibits. We opened the 46th experiment named "The die is cast" on Friday, the 9th of November 2008.
The experiment, which was developed in Hiša in cooperation with ARAO agency will help visitors to understand the phenomenon of radioactive decay. But don't worry! The experiment is not radioactive. Decay of atomic nuclei is represented with "decaying" dice.
At this occasion Miha Kos presented the "Sonnets of Science". As the name of the book suggests, the sonnets tell of different scientific phenomena from everyday life. Each sonnet is accompanied by a short easy-to-undestand explanation and an illustration by Božo Kos. Books (in Slovene) are available for sale in Hiša.

Science Whatever at Gimnazija Litija high school
Gimnazija Litija celebrates its 10th anniversary. For this occasion, Hiša eksperimentov and Gimnazija Ledina cooperated in the presentation of the workshop Science Whatever, which was held on the premisses of the high school.
This workshop was presented in a new way. Instead of Hiša eksperimentov team, a group of high school student took on the role of explainers. They were trained beforehand at Hiša eksperimentov in skills of constucting pocket-experiments and also on the scientific background of each experiment. During the workshop each one of them guided a group of their peers and took a role of an explainer.

Hiša eksperimentov, the austrian science centre Science Center NetzWerk and Vienna city-traffic company Wiener Linien present "Sience on the Bus" in Vienna. Well, not on exactly on the bus...
Questions and corresponding answers will be displayed on the info-screens at U-Bahn (city underground railway) stations from the 25th of September to the 15th of October 2007.

Experimentarium - explainer exchange
A group of three demonstrators (slovenian term for explainers) from Hisa eksperimentov visited Experimentarium science centre in Denmark from the 3rd to the 7th of Octobre. There they took part in science centre activities and explored differences in communicating science to public and public governance of science centres in Denmark and in Slovenia.
The exchange was a part of the DOTIK project.

DOTIK - European Training for Young Scientists and Museum Explainers
The first international European training took place in SISSA and ICTP congress centre near Trieste (Italy) from the 28th of August to the 2nd of Septembre 2006. More than 60 explainers from 25 countries attended the DOTIK summer school, a Science and Society project, realized by At-Bristol, Hisa eksperimentov, Immaginario Scientifico and SISSA (ICS). A trip to Ljubljana and visit of Hisa eksperimentov were also organized during the school.

Hisa eksperimentov attended the Annual Conference of the European Network of Science Centres and Museums ecsite. The conference took place in Technopolis science centre in Mechelen,

Science up High
The House of Experiments is hosting a ceiling art exhibition with title "Science up High". The exhibition presents 50 ilustrated questions and answers about everyday phenomena. Ilustrations by Božo Kos with Q&A will be displayed until June 2006.
All material was also published in a booklet, which is available for sale in The House of Experiments.

Science on the Bus
The House of Experiments has initiated a project as a part of and contribution to The World Year of Physics 2005. The main goal of this project is to bring science closer to the general public.
We have selected 50 questions that are relevant to everyday situations, and provided short but scientifically correct and informative answers. Each question and the corresponding answers were printed on boards. We also added illustrations that bring friendliness and humour to the explanations.
Questions and answers have been distributed to local city bus companies. Around 350 city buses in 7 cities across Slovenia are equipped with these �science popularisation boards�.

DOTIK is a project for international european school for training young scientists and museum explainers. Opening day of two exhibitions and two new experiments
Monday, the 20th of December, was a special day for The House of Experiments. We hosted openings of two exhibitions: Science in illustration by Bozo Kos and Gorazd Planinsic and Those, who succeeded, are above by Bozo Kos. Exhibitions will be on display until March 2005.
We also enriched our collection of hands-on exhibits with two new experiments. The first one, called Launchpad, will tell you, how high you can lift your center of gravity. The second experiment is called Obidient divers and is an improved version of two-liquid Cartesian diver.
